Gregorie wins seat on council

William Dudley Gregorie won Tuesday's runoff election for a seat on Charleston City Council, defeating Tommie Fleming Coaxum, who had enjoyed the support of Mayor Joe Riley and state Sen. Robert Ford.

Gregorie, from Charleston's West Side, ran a vigorous campaign for mayor against Riley in 2007 and will now sit across the room from him in the city's District 6 council seat.

"It is going to be the most exciting time of my life," said Gregorie, 60, who was a regional director for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in Columbia until his retirement two years ago.
